Very often my couples decide to include their beloved dogs in the engagement photos, and I absolutely support the idea. A sessions always turns to be a more fun and lively event, and the couples feel and act so much more relaxed. It’s worth to mention though that a dog-friendly session needs preparation, so below are my planning tips that my clients always find helpful.
Reasons why you should bring your dog to your engagement session
Bringing your dog to your engagement session can add a unique and special touch in addition to creating captured memories that you will cherish for years to come. Here are some reasons why you should consider bringing your furry friend along:
Your dog is a beloved member of your family, and including them in your engagement session can make the photos even more meaningful and personal.
If you are having a destination wedding or simply don’t want to complicate your wedding day logistics by bringing a dog, engagement session is a great solution for capturing you all together.
Your dog’s presence can help to ease any nerves or tension that you may feel during the photoshoot, allowing you to feel more comfortable and natural in front of the camera.
Generally dogs are funny and adorable and you both will feel more relaxed, spontaneous and lively with the presence of your dog.
What to consider when planning a dog-friendly session
While it’s a fun experience, you need to come slightly more prepared to take the most out of your photoshoot. Here are a few things to consider:
Choose a location that offers an aesthetically pleasing backdrop, fits your style and has extra space for walking with a dog. Some of the nicest dog-friendly locations in New York include the West Village, Washington Square Park, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and Central Park. Try to avoid the crowds and other distractions that can take the dog’s attention.
Bring along some dog treats and water to hydrate your pup. You can as well pack some toys that will grab your dog’s attention. Generally, bring anything you think can help along the way since you are the ones who know your dog’s temper and behavior better.
Bring a friend or a family member who can take care of the dog in between the process if needed. Additionally, they can care all the treat and accessories so your hands are empty. This will allow us to capture extra candid moments without unnecessary elements.
If you are into fashion, you may choose an outfit for your dog that complements your outfit as well.
If your dog sheds, bring a roller so we can quickly fix your outfit before in between.
