Central Park during the cherry blossom season is truly magical and a must-see in New York in spring. Ranging from deep magenta to pale pink to crisp white, they make the city look colorful and fresh and are always the prettiest sight to enjoy after a long winter.

As a New York wedding photographer, I do recommend my couples to take advantage of this short blooming season and take engagement photos during cherry blossoms in Central Park. Below you can find a few helpful tips to plan your cherry blossom engagement session.

1. Plan the time

The cherry trees bloom for a short period, usually between late March and early May. The exact dates of peak cherry blossom season vary from year to year and depend on the winter temperatures, but it’s always good to check the Central Park Conservancy Cherry Blossom Tracker or simply walk around these spots to anticipate the right moment. As we are known to be flexible, we’ll make sure to find the perfect day and time for you to schedule your engagement session around the cherry blossom peaks.

2. Choose the location

Central Park has several locations with cherry blossom trees, but some of the most popular spots are the Cherry Hill, Conservatory Garden, and the Shakespeare Garden. It’s good to walk around these spots to decide what you like the most and at the same time check how touristic these places are.

3. Plan your outfits

For fashion we recommend blush and airy spring colors, a mix of romance, elegance and sophistication. Try to avoid green palette so you don’t blend in with the bright fresh greenery of the park. In general, choose outfits that complement each other, are comfortable to move around in, and reflect your personal style. You can also add accessories such as sunglasses, or statement jewelry to complete your looks. And don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes for walking around the park!

For Her:

  • A flowy maxi dress in a pastel color like blush pink, lavender, or pale blue
  • A feminine blouse paired with high-waisted pants or jeans
  • A midi or maxi dress with a wrap or ruffle detail
  • A mini dress paired with an oversized blazer

For Him:

  • A classic suit in a light color such as beige, light gray, or navy blue
  • A tailored blazer paired with slim-fit trousers and a dress shirt
  • A patterned button-up shirt paired with dress pants
  • A blazer paired with a turtleneck and dress pants
  • A lightweight trench coat paired with slim-fit trousers and dress shoes

We do recommend investing in hair and make up for your session as well – it may still be slightly chilly or windy, and you may want your look (especially if you wear your hair down) to stay well put.

4. Enjoy!

The most important tip is to enjoy and have fun as you go – play with the nature, embrace it and enjoy each other’s company while spring continues to amaze us with its beauty.
